이 글은 KAIST 글로벌 IT기술대학원프로그램(ITTP) 과정을 밟고 있는 연구원들을 대상으로 허브줌에서 모집한 필진의 칼럼입니다.

보통, 대부분의 사람들은 아프리카에 대해서 배회하는 동물, 서구로부터의 도움을 기다리는 수많은 굶주린 아이들, 전쟁, 질병, 가난, 부패 그리고 다른 많은 편향된 이미지나 인식을 가지고 있다. 또한 많은 사람들이 아프리카를 대륙이 아닌 하나의 단일 국가로 생각한다. 이러한 잘못된 인식들은 아프리카 사람들에 의한 아프리카의 브랜딩이 없는 것, 그리고 어두운 21세기의 극심한 생존 경쟁 속에서 스스로 진실을 찾을 사람들의 무능력함으로 조성되었다.

 

아프리카는 지역 면적과 인구 규모 모두 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 대륙이다. 2014년 세계 인구 통계 자료에 따르면 11억 명이 넘는 아프리카 인구는 전세계 인구의 15.7% 를 차지한다. 아프리카 대륙은 54개의 민족국가로 구성되었고 인구의 절반 이상이 19세 이하로 구성되어 세계에서 가장 젊은 인구 밀도를 가지고 있다. Population Reference Bureau에 의하면 아프리카의 인구는 2050년까지 24억명에 이를 것으로 전망되며 21세기 말에는 40억명 정도가 될 것이라 예상된다. 이는 세계 전체 인구의 40%에 육박하는 것이다. 또한IMF가 발표한 2014년 세계 경제 전망 보고서에 따르면 아프리카는 가장 빠르게 성장하고 있는 세계 경제 10곳 중에 6위를 자랑한다.

 

아프리카는 기술적 발전에 있어서도 가장 빠르게 성장하고 있는 경제 중에 하나이며 2014년 2사분기 기준(도표1) 인구의 26% 이상이 온라인 상태이다. 이는 불과 5년 전에 비해 2000% 넘게 증가한 것인데(도표2, 도표3) 아프리카 해안을 따라 생긴 엄청난 해저 케이블 부설 덕분이다. 10년도 안되어서 수많은 아프리카의 해저 케이블 착공 지점들이 2001년에서 2008년 사이 단 하나에서 2014년에는 18개로 늘어났다. 이는 뛰어난 인터넷 접속 속도를 제공했고, 국제적 수용 비용뿐만 아니라 국가적, 지역적 주파수 대역폭 비용까지 끌어 내렸다. AUC(The African Union Commission )는 60개 가량의 해저 케이블 거점들이 멀지 않은 미래에 디지털 분배의 다리 역할을 하고 아프리카와 다른 해외 국가와 기업들에게 플랫폼을 제공할 것이라고 발표했다. 기업들은 광대한 대역폭 수용력을 지렛대 삼아 각각 그들의 개인 혹은 사업 목표를 이룰 것이다.

아프리카에서 벌어지고 있는 이러한 기술적으로 빈틈없고 정교한 현실에 기반하면 아프리카에 대해 사람들과 미디어가 갖고 있는 이미지가 밝지 않고 흐리다는 것은 매우 이상한 일이다.

 

글로벌 비즈니스 커뮤니티는 아프리카의 기술적 혁명을 간과하지 않았다. 지난 10년에 걸쳐, IBM, Microsoft, Alcatel-Lucent, Google, General Electric, ICANN, Cisco, Huawei, and HP를 포함한 다국적 기업들이 수많은 지사들을 설립해 대륙의 중요한 국가 인프라 건설을 목적으로 아프리카 정부∙지역 회사들과 협업하고 파트너쉽을 맺으며 그들의 입지를 넓혔으며 이로 인해 아프리카인들에게 상당한 고용의 기회를 창출했다.

 

몇몇 지방의 기관들도 또한 인터넷 금융, e-커머스 서비스, 온라인 사업 등록, 온라인 납부 제도, 온라인 여권 신청, 온라인 비디오 스트리밍, 온라인 게임과 같은 무수한 전자 서비스를 제공하기 위해 아프리카의 기술 인프라를 발판으로 삼았다.

 

아프리카에는 알려지지 않은 수많은 아프리카 사람들의 성공 스토리, 미개발된 사업 기회 그리고 21세기의 도전들에 부합하는 숙련되고 교육 받은 인력들이 있다. 이러한 긍정적인 면들은 안타깝게도 뉴스 헤드라인을 장식하는 일이 없고, 심지어 아프리카 조차 그 이야기를 잘 하지 못하고 있다. 그러므로 아프리카의 성공 스토리를 전세계에 알리기 위해서는 모든 아프리카인들과 그리고 모든 아프리카의 친구들에 의한 꾸준한 노력이 필요하다. 그것이 세계인들이 지금 아프리카에 대해 가지고 있는 부정적인 인식들을 최소화하고 결국에는 없앨 수 있는 가장 확실한 방법이다.

 

다음에 당신이 아프리카에 대해 생각할 때는 기술적 혁명을 떠올려라! 미개발된 사업 기회들을 생각해라! 고급 인력과 그리고 성공을 그려라!

[원문] Africa the Unknown 

 

Oftentimes, the images or perceptions most people have of Africa are animals walking on the streets, hungry malnourished children waiting to get aid from the western world, wars, diseases and poverty, corruption and many other stereotypical images or perceptions. Also, most people think of Africa as one country although it is a continent. This skewed perception is aided in part by little to no branding of Africa by Africans, and the inability of people to find the truth for themselves as we find ourselves in a rat race jostling for survival in this busy, murky 21st century world of unknowns.

 

Africa is the second largest continent in the world both in terms of land mass and population with over 1.1 billion inhabitants, representing 15.7% of the world’s population according to data from the 2014 World Population Data Sheet. The African continent consists of 54 nation states with more than 50% of the population 19 years old or younger, making it the continent with the youngest population in the world. Africa’s population is expected to reach 2.4 billion by 2050 and over 4 billion by the end of the 21st century, making up 40% of the world’s total population, according to the Population Reference Bureau. The continent also boasts of 6 out of the 10 fastest growing economies in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) 2014 World Economic Outlook report.

 

In terms of technological advancement, Africa is one of the fastest growing economies as well with over 26% of the continent’s population online as at 2nd Quarter of 2014 (Fig.1 ), over 2000% increase from just 5 years ago, owing in part to the massive deployment of submarine cables along the shores of Africa (Fig. 2 and 3).  In less than a decade, the number of submarine cable landing points in Africa has increased from a single landing point between 2001 and 2008 to 18 landing points at the end of 2014, providing superior Internet connection speeds, driving down both national and local bandwidth costs as well as international capacity costs. The African Union Commission (AUC) forecasts the deployment of up to 60 submarine cable stations in Africa in the not too distant future in the continent’s drive to bridge the digital divide and provide the platform for both African and foreign nationals and businesses to leverage the enormous bandwidth capacity on the shores on Africa to achieve their personal and business objectives respectively.

With this evidence of technologically astute and sophisticated realities that exist in Africa, it is very strange that the image of Africa in peoples’ minds and on most media platforms are that of a blurry and murky one rather than vibrant.

 

The global business community has not lost sight of Africa’s technological revolution. Over the last decade, multinational firms or corporations including but not limited to; IBM, Microsoft, Alcatel-Lucent, Google, General Electric, ICANN, Cisco, Huawei, and HP have all established their presence across Africa, establishing permanent offices, collaborating with and partnering African governments and local companies to build the continent’s critical national infrastructure, creating massive employment opportunities for many African nationals as a result.

 

Several regional institutions are also leveraging Africa’s technological infrastructure to provide a myriad of services including but not limited to Internet banking services, e-commerce services, online business registrations, online tax filing, online passport applications, online video streaming, online gaming, and a host of other electronic services in Africa for Africans. 

 

There are numerous untold African success stories, numerous untapped business opportunities, and highly skilled and educated human resource to effectively meet the challenges of the 21st century in Africa. These positives in Africa unfortunately do not make news headlines, neither does the African continent tell its story well enough if it tells it all. A conscientious effort is therefore required by every African national and every “friend” of Africa to preach Africa’s success stories to the world. That is the surest way to minimize and eventually eliminate the current negative perceptions and images of Africa in the world’s mind.

 

Next time you think about Africa, think technological revolution!! Think untapped business opportunities!! Think highly skilled, educated labor!! Think Success!!
